Newsletter #84 --- Best defense against wrinkles and fine lines

Dr. Nicholas Perricone (a dermatologist from Yale university and author of the New York Times bestseller "The Wrinkle Cure") believe in "The Free-Radical Theory of Aging " -- that aging skin is the end result of chronic excessive exposure to free radicals. Aging of the skin with sagging and wrinkling is indeed a function of inflammation and free radical damage --a combination of factors including the passage of time, stress, environmental pollution, the sun's UVA/UVB rays, smoking, poor nutrition, excessive alcohol consumption, sleep deprivation and others producing free radicals that attack and compromise our skin's immune system. The result is cellular damage, as evident in premature aging, wrinkle formation. hyperpigmentation, and melanoma.

With proper care you can have fabulous skin in your forties, fifties, sixties and beyond.

The best approach to rejuvenate the aging skin is through a combination of proper diet, sun block with antioxidants, oral antioxidants and topical antioxidants.

On the oral front, eat antioxidant foods such as cantaloupe and dark green leafy vegetables. Simple carbs ravage your skin and speed aging. So, avoid "bad simple carbohydrates" high in the glycemic index, such as pasta, white sugar, potato and pancakes. Eat "fish, fish and more fish."(Deep sea fish preferably wild Alaska salmon for minimal chemical contamination) and nuts (Almonds, walnut) for the skin and heart healthy omega 3 fatty acids or take pharmaceutical-grade Omega 3 Fatty Acid gel 2 gm/day.

Take these two powerful antioxidants by mouth daily.

  1. Alpha Lipoic Acid is a very special anti-oxidant that has both water and fat-soluble properties. Not only is it a powerful free-radical inhibitor and a wonderful nutrient for rejuvenating the skin, alpha lipoic acid can potentially function in the prevention of diabetic complications. Dr. Perricone has recommended a daily dose of 100 mg of alpha lipoic acid for a healthy individual. A daily dose of 300 mg to 600 mg is advised for those who would like to fight aging more aggressively or people suffering with any chronic illnesses, such as diabetes.
  2. CoQ10 is a powerful antioxidant. Co-Q-10 plays an integral role in energy production in the cell and has been shown to demonstrate benefits in heart disease, especially cardiomyopathy, diabetes, periodontal disease and even cancer. Dr. Perricone suggests a daily dose of between 100 mg of Co-Q10 for a healthy individual. For those individuals suffering with heart disease and conditions noted above, take 200 mg to 400 mg daily.

On the topical level, apply the best skin care product containing proven powerful free radical scavenging antioxidants.

No matter your skin color or type (dry, oily, prone to breakouts or easily irritated), no matter your age, these topical antioxidants should revitalize your skin from the outside and inside, reducing and effectively erasing wrinkles, blemishes, crow's-feet, dark under-eye shadows and sagging skin.
